Australia asks you to prove financial capacity: enough money for living costs, your course fees and travel. Here is how the official figures add up.

How the money you show is worked out

  1. Living costs: AUD 29,710 for 12 months (pro rata if your course is shorter).
  2. Course fees: your first 12 months of fees, minus anything already paid (with a receipt or your CoE as proof).
  3. Travel: the cost of getting to Australia.

Family members add AUD 10,394 for a partner and AUD 4,449 per child, but from 2 October 2026 most students can no longer include family at all.

Common questions

How much money do I need to show for an Australian student visa?
AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, plus your first year's course fees and travel. A partner adds AUD 10,394 and each child AUD 4,449, where family can still be included.
What if my course is shorter than 12 months?
Work out the living costs pro rata. Divide the annual amount by 365 and multiply by the number of days you will stay.
Is health insurance included in the visa fee?
No. You buy Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) separately and must hold it for your whole stay.
