Two kinds of money matter for a UK Student visa: the fees you pay to apply, and the money you must show to prove you can live in the UK. The table below sets them side by side.

How the money you show is worked out

Add your first year's course fees (minus anything already paid, as shown on your CAS) to your living costs. Living costs are counted for up to 9 months, so a one-year master's outside London needs 9 × £1,171 = £10,539 on top of the fees.

The money must sit in the account for 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before you apply.

Why is the London amount higher?
The Home Office sets a higher living-cost amount for courses in London (£1,529 a month) than elsewhere (£1,171 a month), for up to 9 months.
Will the funds amount change?
Yes. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, it rises to £1,570 a month in London and £1,203 a month outside London.
