UK scholarships for Nepali students

Last verified

Most Nepali students pay for UK study themselves, but a few scholarships can cover a large part of the cost. The two best known are Chevening and GREAT Scholarships. This guide explains who can apply and where to check dates, because both change every year.

Chevening scholarships

Chevening is the UK government's international scholarship. It funds a one-year master's degree at a UK university.

  1. Check you meet the basics

You need an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's, finished at least two years before the application deadline. You also need at least two years of work experience (2,800 hours) gained after that degree.

  2. Choose three courses

You apply to three different eligible UK university courses. You must hold an unconditional offer from at least one of them by the Chevening deadline.

  3. Commit to returning

You must promise to return to your country of award for at least two years after the scholarship ends.

  4. Apply in the open window

The 2027/28 round opened in August 2026 and closed in October 2026. Interviews take place at British embassies from March to April 2027, with results in mid-June 2027. The Chevening page for Nepal says the next round is not announced yet, so follow its official channels.

GREAT Scholarships

GREAT Scholarships are run with the British Council and offer postgraduate funding at partner UK universities. For Nepal you must be a Nepali citizen with an undergraduate degree and meet your university's English language requirement. The money is paid by the university, so each university sets its own deadline.

The British Council's Nepal page still shows the list of universities for an earlier year. Check each university's own GREAT Scholarships page for the current round before you apply.

University scholarships

Many UK universities also offer their own awards for international students. Rules, amounts and deadlines differ by university, so look on the scholarships page of the course you want and note the deadline when you shortlist universities.

Scholarships and your visa

A scholarship does not replace your Student visa. You still apply for the visa and show your funds. If a UK government scholarship sponsors you, you may be able to bring your family: see our dependant visa guide.
