Finland scholarships for Nepali students

Last verified

Finland is different from many countries: the government does not run a scholarship for bachelor's or master's study. Be careful with websites that promise a "fully funded Finnish government scholarship".

Where the money comes from

  • University scholarships and tuition fee waivers: Finnish universities offer them to international students at bachelor's and master's level. Amounts, rules and deadlines differ, so read each university's funding page before you apply.
  • Doctoral funding: funding options exist for doctoral study. Ask the department or supervisor.
  • Part-time work: you can work during your studies, but earnings will not cover all living costs or tuition.

How a scholarship helps your permit

Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) counts a living-cost grant or scholarship toward the money you must show. Attach the grant decision to your application.

  • Example from Migri: for a one-year stay with a €2,000 grant, you need €7,600 in your account, not €9,600.
  • If a scholarship covers your tuition, attach a certificate from your school. You still need enough money for living costs.

Money from a sponsor such as a parent must be in your own bank account, and Migri may ask for documents on where it came from. Sponsorship agreements from relatives, friends or employers are not accepted.

Common questions

Does the Finnish government offer scholarships for bachelor's or master's study?
No. Study in Finland says Finland does not offer government scholarships for bachelor's or master's studies, and warns that claims of fully funded Finnish government scholarships are misleading.
Where do scholarships come from then?
From the universities. Universities offer scholarships and tuition fee waivers for international students at bachelor's and master's level, and funding exists at doctoral level.
Do I pay tuition as a Nepali student?
Non-EU and non-EEA students in English-taught bachelor's or master's programmes pay tuition fees, so waivers and scholarships are the main way to reduce that cost.
How does a scholarship change the money I must show for the permit?
A grant or scholarship for living costs counts toward the income requirement. With a €2,000 grant, a one-year student needs €7,600 instead of €9,600.
