Canada scholarships for Nepali students

Last verified

Canada does not have one big scholarship for Nepali students. Most money comes from the university or college you apply to, and the government programmes are narrow. Plan for scholarships as a bonus, not as your only way to pay.

Where to look

  • University and college awards: many institutions offer entrance awards based on grades. Look at the awards page of every school on your list and note the deadline, because it can be earlier than the admission deadline.
  • Graduate funding: master's and doctoral students are often funded through their department. Ask the supervisor or programme office what funding comes with an offer.
  • Doctoral awards: the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships accepted nominations from foreign citizens, but only from a university with a quota, and only for a first full-time doctorate. The Vanier page is now archived and points to the new Canada Graduate Research Scholarship (Doctoral), so ask the university which one it uses.
  • Government of Canada programmes: the EduCanada site lists the Global Affairs Canada scholarships. Check each page for the countries it covers.

How a scholarship fits your permit

A scholarship does not replace the study permit. You still need your letter of acceptance and the other documents. One thing does change: recipients of Global Affairs Canada scholarships are exempt from the provincial attestation letter, but must provide proof of the exemption.

Common questions

Is there one national scholarship for Nepali students in Canada?
No single Canada-wide scholarship is open to every Nepali applicant. Most funding comes from the university or college you apply to, so check each institution's awards page before the deadline.
Can an international student get the Vanier scholarship?
Foreign citizens can be nominated, but only by a Canadian university that holds a quota, and only for a first doctorate. The Vanier page is now archived, so check the tri-agency doctoral programme that replaces it.
Does a scholarship change my permit requirements?
Recipients of Global Affairs Canada scholarships are exempt from the provincial attestation letter, but you must still show proof of the exemption.
Can I apply directly for the Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030?
No. Individuals cannot apply directly; candidates apply through the programme's international partners. The page does not name Nepal, so ask the programme before you plan around it.
