Canada intakes and when to apply

Last verified

Canadian programmes start at set times, and your permit depends on a letter of acceptance. Work backwards from your start date so your offer, attestation letter, funds and permit are ready in time.

The main intakes

  • September (fall): the main intake, with the widest choice of programmes.
  • January (winter): offered by many colleges and universities.
  • May (summer): mostly colleges, for selected programmes.

Start dates and deadlines vary by programme, so confirm them with each school.

A timeline that works

  1. Apply to schools about a year ahead

IRCC recommends applying about a year in advance for a post-secondary programme. Check each school's deadline and whether your programme is open to international students.

  2. Accept your offer and get your letter of acceptance

You need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) to apply for a study permit.

  3. Get your attestation letter

Most students need a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL). Master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt, and Quebec students need a CAQ.

  4. Arrange your funds

  5. Apply for your study permit

Check the current processing time for Nepal on the IRCC page before you choose your travel date.
