Study in Germany
Germany intakes and application deadlines
Last verified
German universities run two semesters, and you must be admitted before you can apply for the study visa. Plan the university applications first, then the visa.
The two intakes
- Winter semester (starts September or October): the main intake, with the most programmes.
- Summer semester (starts March or April): fewer programmes, although around a quarter of bachelor's programmes can also start in summer.
Deadlines vary by university and programme, and private universities may have different dates. Always confirm with each university's International Office.
Typical application windows
- Winter semester: the application phase usually starts in early May and ends on 15 July. Acceptance letters are sent in August or September.
- Summer semester: the application phase usually runs from early December to 15 January. Acceptance letters are sent in February or March.
Foreign students apply to the university directly, to uni-assist, or to the Foundation for University Admissions, depending on country, qualification and subject. Uni-assist charges €75 for the first choice and €30 for each further course in the same semester.
