Bringing your spouse and children to Finland as a student

Last verified

Finland lets the spouse and children of a degree student apply for their own residence permit. Plan the extra money before you promise your family a date.

Who can apply

Your spouse and children can apply for a residence permit on the basis of family ties. They can apply at the same time as you or later.

For family members of degree students at a higher education institution, Migri says they can get a continuous (A) permit. The first permit lasts up to one year, and extensions up to four years.

Money for family

Family members need sufficient funds. According to Migri, the monthly amounts are:

Family memberPer monthPer year
Spouse€700€8,400
First child€500€6,000

The funds can be held in the family member's own account or a joint account. These amounts are on top of your own funds. For more than one child, check the Migri page.

What we have not confirmed

Migri's page does not say whether family members may work. Do not plan your budget around your spouse's income until you have checked the permit conditions.
