Study in Sweden

Bringing your family to Sweden as a student

Last verified

Sweden lets the family of a student apply to join them. New rules took effect on 1 October 2026, so read this before you plan.

Who can come

Family means spouses, cohabiting partners, registered partners and unmarried children under 18. They can apply at the same time as you, or afterwards.

A family member who applies after you have applied or been granted a permit submits their own application. They generally apply while outside Sweden. The family permit can be granted for the same period as yours, but never longer than the passport is valid, and it can be extended.

Extra money for family

You must be able to support your family for the whole permit period. The monthly amounts, which are added to your own funds (2026 rates):

Partner or other adultSEK 4,440
Each childSEK 2,664

What changed on 1 October 2026

Migrationsverket says these rules now apply to family members of students:

  • Health insurance: family members who will stay in Sweden for a maximum of one year must have comprehensive health insurance. It must cover things such as medical treatment and hospital care.
  • Children who are not the student's own: a permit can be granted only if the child's parent is also the child's legal guardian.
  • Funds: no change. You must still show enough money for your family for the permit period.

Money from relatives

The Migration Agency does not accept sponsorship agreements from relatives, friends or employers. Funds must be in your own bank account, and it may ask where the money came from.
